Research er søgen efter viden. Design research, søgen efter viden om design, indgår rutinemæssigt i professionelt designarbejde, uden at ethvert logodesign derfor skal defineres som research. Nogle af Designlabs opgaver handler i særlig grad om søgen efter viden. Det gælder for eksempel opgaver med udformning af nationale designpolitikker med tanke på at udnytte professionel design til at skabe added value. Det gælder også Per Mollerups bøger.
